Malawi First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika has called on artists and other influential figures to use their voices and platforms to intensify the fight against gender-based violence.
Professor Mutharika made the appeal at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe when she met Nigerian music superstar and actress Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage.
The First Lady said Malawi must harness all available resources and influential voices to end gender-based violence and protect vulnerable members of society.
She specifically appealed to Savage to use her international influence to amplify advocacy and raise awareness about the fight against gender-based violence.
Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha, who spoke on the sidelines of the meeting, described the engagement between the First Lady and the Nigerian star as an important step in strengthening the campaign against gender-based violence.
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malawi, Rebecca Adda-Dontoh, was also present at the meeting. She said the United Nations invited Savage to Malawi to support efforts aimed at combating gender-based violence by using her global platform and influence.
For her part, Savage said the fight against gender-based violence is deeply personal to her, having been a victim herself. She said she remains passionate about using her voice and platform to advocate for survivors and help end the vice.
