The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) says it will construct a tollgate between Mangochi Turn-off and Ulongwe on the Arthur Peter Mutharika Road in Balaka District is describing it as a game changer in generating adequate revenue for the rehabilitation of national and district roads.
Public Relations Manager for Roads Fund Administration Masauko Mngwaluko said this today in Balaka District when he was briefing district officials about the project as it is expected to start soon.
Ngwaluko said that tollgates generate adequate revenue hence RFA plans to construct tollgates on all the roads under the Roads Authority currently under construction.
According to Mngwaluko, once construction of the facility along Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway is completed and it becomes operational, it is expected to collect about K8 million per day.
District Commissioner for Balaka, Bibu Yusuf Mdala said the tollgate is a development on its own, saying it will change appearance of the area where the tollgate is.
Member of Parliament for Balaka Ulongwe Constituency Idrissa Ngunga said construction of the tollgate on the Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway is an assurance that the road will be maintained regularly.
Ngunga added that they expect people around the area to get job opportunities during the time the organization will be operating at the site.
Currently Malawi has tollgates at Chingeni in Ntcheu and Kalinyeke in Dedza district which are in operation.
