As cables are reporting , President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika has reportedly flown to India from South Africa for medical attention.
On 6th October 2026, APM left Malawi through Kamuzu International Airport for South Africa on what Government called a private visit.
The trip came as an emergency as the news that President Mutharika left for South Africa was officially communicated by the government when Mutharika was airborne and passing Gweru in .Zimbabwe.
Cables tracked down the vista jet carrying Mutharika registered under number 9H-VJW.
This is his 5th private trip to South Africa since he came back to power in October 2025. Official statement by Chief Secretary Justin Saidi did not give reason or duration.
However, sources close to Mutharika in South Africa confided to cables that the trip was for hospital check-up, and when things got a bit complicated there, Mutharika was flown to India.
Government has not yet confirmed any medical details or the health status of Mutharika since he bounced back to power and has frequently travelled to South Africa on what they call private trips on tax payers money .
Malawians are wishing President Mutharika all the best and quick recovery amid secrecy over his illness .
So far , Mutharika has been outside of the country for 61 days in private trips since he bounced back to power .

Arthur Peter Mutharika was born 18 July 1940 in Thyolo, younger brother to late President Bingu wa Mutharika.
He went to Dedza Secondary, studied Law at University of London (1965) and Yale (Masters & Doctorate). He taught law for 39 years at Washington University, USA.
He served as Minister of Justice, Education and Foreign Affairs. In Education he started the idea of new universities like MUST and LUANAR.
He became President 2014-2020, lost in 2020 fresh election to Lazarus Chakwera, then at 85 years made a comeback winning 16 September 2025 election with 56.8% against 33% for Chakwera, sworn in 4 October 2025 with VP Jane Ansah.
