Leaders of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Kasungu District have appealed to former President and party leader, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, to contest the 2030 presidential election on the party’s ticket.
The appeal was made by MCP Kasungu District Chairperson, Chisomo Mbembedza, who said Malawi is facing numerous challenges and, in his view, Dr. Chakwera has the experience, leadership and ability needed to address them.
Mbembedza said many Malawians are currently facing serious hardships in their day-to-day lives, adding that MCP leaders in Kasungu want Chakwera to continue leading the party and become its presidential candidate in the 2030 elections.
Speaking before a large crowd that gathered at Mtunthama Market, Dr. Chakwera said he had heard and taken note of the appeal from both the people and the party leadership.
Although Chakwera did not give a clear indication of whether he will contest the 2030 presidential election, he acknowledged the concerns and hardships being faced by many Malawians.
The former President also noted that many people in the country are experiencing economic difficulties, particularly due to poor agricultural production and the shortage of money circulating in the economy.
“I have heard your request,” Chakwera told the cheering crowd, which showed strong interest in his message.
The gathering came after Chakwera attended the Annual General Conference of the CCAP Livingstonia Synod at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu.
The call for Chakwera to contest the 2030 presidential election comes as the MCP continues to prepare for the future and strengthen its position as an opposition party.
