Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Central Region, Hon. Alfred Gangata, who also serves as Minister of Sports, has revealed that he is set to host the country’s Second Vice President as the campaign period for the Lilongwe Bwaila Constituency by-election comes to an end.
The by-election is scheduled for June 28, with the DPP expected to conclude its campaign on June 27 at Chisomo Idea Ground in Chinsapo, Lilongwe.
Gangata’s remarks come amid rumours that had been circulating, suggesting that he had abandoned party activities in the Central Region and was rebelling against the DPP leadership over alleged lack of appreciation. His involvement in the final campaign rally is seen as a response to such claims.
The by-election is considered a significant test for the ruling party, which has fielded Mike Chimzukila as its candidate. The party will face strong competition from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which is represented by Precious Kabambe.
Among the senior DPP officials expected to attend the rally are Second Vice President Enock Chihana, Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri, Minister of Gender Mary Navicha, Regional Governor David Kambalame, and several other party leaders.
