Two men, Mariam Gilo, 37, and Mphatso Henry, 32 have been arrested at Mponela, in Dowa District, for allegedly being found in possession of a live Pangolin which is a protected species.
According to Sergeant Macpatson Msadala who is Mponela Police Public Relations Officer, two were arrested at around a midday of 26 September 2026, following a tip-off that they were offering a live pangolin for sale at Madisi Trading Centre.
Msadala said detectives from Madisi Police Post, together with general-duty police officers, launched investigations which led to the arrest of the suspects who were found with the live pangolin hidden inside a laptop bag.
He added that investigations are underway to establish the origin of the animal, as arrangements of handing over to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife are underway for species verification and further handling.
The suspects Gilo who hails from Kapangalika Village in the area of Traditional Authority Malembo and Mphatso Henry from Kapundu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsinde, both in Lilongwe District are expected to appear in court after investigations are completed.
