Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika has issued a World Press Freedom Day statement urging stronger protection for journalists and reaffirming his government’s commitment to a free and independent media. The president said his administration supports a safe and open environment for journalists to work without interference.
He also stressed that a government that is not scrutinized cannot be held accountable, describing press freedom as a fundamental public right.
The statement also called on journalists in Malawi to uphold professional ethics, accuracy, and patriotism. It urged the media to go beyond reporting and help educate and empower citizens through informed analysis and reporting.
