Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has maintained its grip on the leadership of Mmbelwa District Council after its councillors secured both the chairperson and vice-chairperson positions in the latest elections.
MCP councillor for Luviri Ward in Mzimba South Constituency, Joel Nkhata, has retained his position as council chairperson for another year after polling 15 of the 25 votes cast.
His fellow MCP councillor, Evans Ndhlovu of Mabulabo North Ward, finished second with 9 votes, while Absolom Chumachaazungu of Boma Ward secured one vote.
Meanwhile, Victor Muva, MCP councillor for Walula Ward in Mzimba East Constituency, has also retained his position as vice-chairperson after securing 16 votes from fellow councillors.
In his acceptance speech, Nkhata thanked fellow councillors for renewing their confidence in his leadership, pledging to continue championing their welfare while advancing development initiatives across the district.
The outcome represents a setback for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has failed to wrestle control of the council’s top leadership positions from the opposition MCP.
