Following Malawi Cables Online’s exposé on modern-day slavery, exploitation and poor working conditions at Shayona Cement in Kasungu, the Minister of Labour has today visited the company.
For the past two days, senior government officials from the Ministry of Labour and the Department of Immigration have also been visiting the cement manufacturer.
As previously reported by Cables, several employees raised serious concerns about labour law violations, including unsafe working environments, lack of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), unpaid overtime, absence of dust allowances and alleged threats of dismissal against workers who question their conditions of service.
The revelations painted a disturbing picture of Malawians working under conditions that are contrary to the country’s labour laws and standards of decent employment.
Today’s ministerial visit and the presence of other government officials mark an important development following the concerns raised by workers through Cables.
Our position remains clear: Malawian workers deserve dignity, fair treatment, safe working environments and respect for their rights, regardless of who owns or operates a company.
We will not stop exposing exploitation and injustices against ordinary Malawians. Our responsibility is to amplify the voices of those who may otherwise go unheard and push for accountability.
Cables will continue following this story. The ultimate goal is not just to expose wrongdoing, but to see tangible improvements in the lives and working conditions of Malawians.
