Arthur Peter Mutharika has issued a formal statement of condolence following the reported passing of Festus Mogae, praising the late statesman for his leadership and contribution to regional development in Southern Africa.
In the statement dated Friday, 8 May 2026, Mutharika described the news as a source of “profound sorrow” for both himself and the people of Malawi. He commended Mogae’s role in advancing economic development in Botswana and acknowledged his influence within regional bodies including the African Union and the Southern African Development Community.
Mutharika said Mogae would be remembered as a “towering figure” whose dedication to regional economic integration and stability left a lasting impact across the African continent.
The statement also extended condolences to Botswana’s leadership, including President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, former First Lady Barbara Gemma Mogae, and the bereaved family. Mutharika noted that the people and government of Malawi stand in solidarity with Botswana during what he described as a difficult national period of mourning.
Festus Mogae served as Botswana’s president from 1998 to 2008 and was widely respected for his economic stewardship, democratic leadership, and advocacy for public health and regional cooperation in Africa.
