The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Simplex Chithyola Banda, MP, has told voters in Lilongwe Bwaila that Malawi’s economic challenges will only end with a change of government and that the DPP government is not the solution .
Chithyola made the remarks on Saturday during a political rally held at Nguluwe Primary School in Chinsapo Township, where he campaigned for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) parliamentary candidate Precious Kabambe ahead of the bye election slated for June 30.
Addressing the gathering, Chithyola said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had failed ordinary Malawians, resulting in worsening economic hardships across the country.
He said farmers continue to struggle with low tobacco and crop prices, while civil servants are burdened by heavy taxes that consume much of their salaries amid a rising cost of living. He also highlighted the plight of young people, saying limited employment opportunities have left many unemployed.
According to the opposition leader, the prices of essential commodities such as maize, fuel, soap, and medicines continue to increase almost every week, making life increasingly difficult for many households.
Chithyola attributed much of the country’s economic difficulties to the continued depreciation of the Malawi Kwacha. He noted that the official exchange rate has risen to over K1,740 to one United States dollar, while the Malawi Revenue Authority is reportedly using an exchange rate of K1,864 for import duty calculations.
He argued that these economic pressures have significantly affected businesses and consumers alike, and urged voters in Lilongwe Bwaila to support Precious Kabambe, saying new leadership would bring renewed hope and improved economic management.
The opposition leader called on residents to vote for the MCP candidate, expressing confidence that a change in leadership would help address the economic challenges facing the country.
