Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma, has successfully earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) after defending his doctoral thesis at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Nkoloma’s research, titled “Innovation Adaptation Framework for Digital Health Systems in Malawi,” explores how Malawi can effectively adopt and sustain digital health innovations to improve healthcare service delivery and patient outcomes.
Presenting his findings before an examination panel, Dr. Nkoloma underscored the growing role of digital technologies in transforming healthcare through improved patient management, disease surveillance, health information management and access to medical services.
He observed that although several digital health initiatives have been introduced in Malawi over the years, many have faced challenges related to sustainability, integration and widespread adoption.
Based on extensive research conducted across various healthcare settings in the country, Dr. Nkoloma developed an Innovation Adaptation Framework aimed at guiding policymakers, healthcare practitioners, technology developers and other stakeholders in implementing digital health systems more effectively.
“The framework identifies key factors influencing adoption, including organisational readiness, technological infrastructure, user acceptance, policy support and continuous capacity building,” he explained during the defence.
The public defence attracted academics, students, colleagues, family members and other stakeholders, who witnessed Dr. Nkoloma confidently respond to questions from the examination panel, demonstrating a strong grasp of both the theoretical and practical aspects of digital health innovation.
The panel commended the quality of the research, describing it as relevant to Malawi’s national development agenda and capable of making a meaningful contribution to strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
The examiners also praised the study for offering practical recommendations that could help bridge gaps in healthcare delivery through the effective use of digital technologies.
The achievement marks the culmination of years of research, dedication and perseverance, during which Dr. Nkoloma balanced academic work with demanding professional and personal responsibilities.
Following the successful defence, colleagues, friends and family congratulated him on the milestone, describing it as a reflection of his commitment to research excellence and innovation.
Dr. Nkoloma’s research is expected to inform future digital health policies and strategies, supporting Malawi’s efforts to build a more efficient, accessible and resilient healthcare system.
