Vice President Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah SC, JA (Retired) has joined President Arthur Peter Mutharika in calling on Malawians to embrace unity and work together for the country’s continued development as the nation marks its 62nd Independence Anniversary.
In her Independence Day message, Ansah said the anniversary provides an opportunity for Malawians to reflect on the sacrifices made by the country’s founding generation while renewing their commitment to national progress and prosperity.
“On this Independence Day, I join His Excellency the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika, and all Malawians in commemorating our cherished Independence Day,” she said.
The Vice President said Malawi’s freedom was achieved through the unity, courage and sacrifice of those who came before, urging citizens to uphold those values as the country continues its development journey.
She called on Malawians to remain united and committed to working together in building a stronger and more prosperous nation for present and future generations.
Ansah’s message echoes President Mutharika’s Independence Day appeal for national unity and collective effort, with the Head of State stressing that economic independence should now become Malawi’s next major goal after attaining political freedom.
This year’s Independence Day commemorations are being observed through prayers, with the government directing that funds initially allocated for celebrations be redirected to programmes aimed at reducing poverty and supporting economic development.
