President Arthur Peter Mutharika has called on Malawians to embrace unity and work towards achieving economic freedom as the country marks its Independence Day.
In a message released on Monday, 6 July 2026, President Mutharika said Independence Day is a reminder of the power of national unity and the courage that secured Malawi’s freedom. He urged citizens to stand together in pursuit of a prosperous future.
“The day reminds us that, when we stand together, we can achieve the unimaginable,”the President said .
The President said Malawi’s mission is not yet complete, arguing that the country’s next major goal is economic independence. In line with that vision, he announced that this year’s Independence Day would be commemorated differently, with prayers taking precedence over traditional celebrations.
He further directed that public funds originally allocated for Independence Day festivities be redirected towards economically productive sectors aimed at reducing poverty.
“All public financial resources that were budgeted for the Independence Day celebrations should be redirected towards economically productive areas to reduce poverty that has deepened over the last five years,” he said .
President Mutharika expressed confidence that Malawi can become an economically independent nation if citizens work together.
“I am confident that working together, we will achieve our dream of making Malawi an economically independent country, with equitably shared wealth,” Mutharika stressed .
He appealed to all Malawians to join hands in advancing the country’s development agenda.
The President also highlighted his administration’s efforts to create a conducive environment for economic growth. Despite what he described as global political, natural and economic challenges, he said Malawi had maintained food security and was making progress in macroeconomic stability.
According to Mutharika, the improving economic environment would help attract investment, generate foreign exchange and create employment opportunities for Malawians.
“Macroeconomic stability is steadily taking root, laying a fertile ground for investments that will generate foreign exchange, create jobs, and grow our economy for the benefit of all,” Mutharika said .
The Independence Day message concluded with a call for national unity and a hopeful vision for Malawi’s future.
