A communication dilemma has emerged within the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) headed by one Justin Saidi following seemingly conflicting announcements regarding who will represent President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Blantyre Synod’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
On Friday, an announcement from the Office of the President and Cabinet indicated that Second Vice President Enock Chihana had been delegated to represent President Mutharika at the historic celebrations taking place in Blantyre.
Malawians went to sleep with that understanding, only to wake up on Saturday morning to another development that raised fresh questions about official communication and coordination within government.
A subsequent letter from the same office reportedly indicated that Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda would now represent the President at the event, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the official arrangements.
The apparent contradiction has left many wondering how two separate communications concerning the same official engagement could generate confusion over presidential representation.
Who is officially designated to represent President Mutharika at the CCAP Blantyre Synod’s 150th anniversary celebrations?
That is the question Malawians are having now .
When communicating presidential delegations, the public should be able to rely on clear, consistent and unambiguous information from the responsible office.
Nevertheless, the conflicting reports warrant clarification from the Office of the President and Cabinet to establish the final arrangements and explain what prompted the subsequent communication.
For an event marking 150 years of the CCAP Blantyre Synod, the focus should be on the celebrations themselves, not uncertainty over official representation.
One event, two communications, and a question that deserves a clear answer: who is representing the President?
