A payment of MK1.3 billion was reportedly made by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to Wilkinson and Associates on 19 June 2026, raising questions about the purpose of the transaction. The company is associated with legal Presentation for opposition Malawi Congress Party .
According to information available to cables , the funds are alleged to have been drawn from an MEC account that holds nomination fees paid by presidential, parliamentary, and local government election candidates.
The payment has attracted attention because Wilkinson and Associates has previously been associated with legal work involving figures linked to the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP). This has prompted calls from some stakeholders for greater transparency regarding the nature of the payment and the services rendered.
A political scientist from University of Malawi told this publication that given the importance of maintaining public confidence in the electoral process, MEC should provide a detailed explanation of the transaction, including the legal basis for the payment, the services provided, and whether proper procurement and financial procedures were followed.
Wilkinson and Associates has, in the past, represented various political actors and clients in legal matters, including cases involving members or interests associated with the Malawi Congress Party.
When we contacted MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa to establish the purpose of the MK1.3 billion payment, the contractual arrangements involved, and whether all legal and financial procedures were properly observed.
His phones went unanswered and the questionnaire that was sent to him was not returned.
