President Mutharika returned to power because Malawians love him, believe in his leadership, and trust that he genuinely means well for them.
They believe in his ability to turn things around and steer the country towards a better future.
However, the biggest challenge Malawians have faced with President Mutharika has not necessarily been about him personally, but rather some of the people surrounding him and serving in his government.
These are individuals who appear to borrow his power and influence to advance their own interests, abuse authority, and engage in conduct that risks damaging his reputation.
Malawians want to protect and preserve President Mutharika’s legacy.
They remember what they went through during the past five years, and they voted for change because they believed he could offer a better direction for the country.
Those seeking to tarnish his legacy must not be allowed to succeed.
President Mutharika’s reputation should not become collateral damage because of the actions, failures, or questionable conduct of those entrusted to serve under him.
The responsibility now lies with the President to ensure that those serving in his government understand that public office is a responsibility, not a licence to abuse power.
Anyone whose actions undermine public trust or threaten to destroy his legacy must be held accountable, regardless of their position or proximity to power.
Malawians did not return Mutharika to power to watch his legacy destroyed from within.
They returned him because they believe in him, and they expect his government to live up to that trust.
