The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has apologised to parties that formed the Tonse Alliance ahead of the 2020 presidential election, including the United Transformation Movement (UTM), acknowledging that it failed to fully deliver on some of the commitments made under the alliance.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira made the remarks this afternoon during Zodiak Broadcasting Station’s Tiuzeni Zoona programme, where she admitted that the party made mistakes during its time in government.

“There are things we should have done better. We have told Malawians that we have learned from the mistakes we made. Where UTM is concerned, it should understand that, for the things we did not do well, we apologise,” Kabwira said.

She also urged the former alliance partners not to listen to what she described as false information, while extending the apology to the other nine parties that were part of the Tonse Alliance.

Kabwira further stated that MCP is prepared to work with other political parties ahead of the 2030 general elections.

She maintained that Lazarus Chakwera remains the leader of MCP until 2029, signalling that the party is open to forming new political partnerships as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
