The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has ordered seven companies to pay monetary penalties totaling K51.5 million and two other companies to refund consumers about K1 million.
Through a press statement signed by CFTC Chief Executive Officer Desmond Kaunda the decision come after its 76th meeting held on 30 September 2026 to consider cases bordering on anti-competitive business practices and unfair trading conducts.
Statement further said that the Commission handled over 64 cases of which 41 were closed at preliminary stage due to lack of merit, lack of evidence and early resolution.
Meanwhile speaking today in Lilongwe at a press briefing Kaunda said on unfair trading practices, the Commission considered alleged cases including supply of products likely to cause injury or harm to consumers involving TUTLAS Limited from Salima which has been fined K25 million for selling expired products, KACHI Supermarket and SANAM Enterprises, unconscionable conduct involving Horizon Health Malawi Limited, and misleading conduct involving Jahabi Enterprises and Jegaf Investments.
On competition cases, Kaunda said the Commission has authorized the proposed acquisition of assets of Open Connect Limited by Telekom Networks Malawi Plc and the proposed acquisition of Libertas General Insurance by Victoria Forex Bureau Limited, and has handled an alleged anti-competitive business practice and abuse of dominance by MASM of which it was found there was no abuse of dominance.
