Malawi has registered a significant progress in fight Tuberculosis with new records shows a decline in TB cases and mortality over the past decade.
Presenting figures during GC 8 National Dialogue, National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Elimination Programme (NTLEP) the TB incidence has declined by 46% from 197 cases per 100, 000 people in 2015 to 107 cases per 100, 000 people in 2025. As TB mortality has dropped by 72% from 62 deaths per 100, 000 people in 2015 to 19 deaths per 100, 000 people in 2025.
Speaking during the dialogue National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Elimination Programme Manager Dr. Kuzani Mbendela said the strides demonstrate that Malawi as a country is moving in the right direction towards the fight against TB.
He said that, although things are like this there are more work that needs to be done in order to find all undiagnosed TB cases and ensure that all cases are under TB treatment service.
” The progress we see is encouraging and reflects a collective efforts of government, Health Workers, Communities and development partners. Our priority is to find missing TB cases, expanding access to rapid diagnosis and treatment and strengthen community interventions so that no one is left behind our journey towards the ending TB in Malawi,” says Dr. Mbendela.
He added that the programme has noted another strides at identification and treatment to new cases as TB treatment coverage has increased from 47 percent in 2015 to 77 percent with 18,378 new and recurrent TB cases were notified in 2025.
The dialogue also noted that despite the significant achievement made country is still facing challenges in fight against Tuberculosis due to limited financial support, Drug-resistant TB among other cases, diagnostic technology that have higher costs and lack of services for children.
