Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. George T. Chaponda, MP, is in Durban, South Africa, attending the 46th Ordinary Meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers, being held from 12 to 14 August 2026.
The meeting brings together Ministers from SADC Member States to deliberate on key issues concerning regional integration, economic development, peace and security, as well as the implementation of the region’s development priorities ahead of the 46th SADC Summit.
For Malawi, the meeting provides an important platform to advance the country’s interests within the regional bloc, particularly in economic integration, trade and investment, agriculture, infrastructure development, energy, transport connectivity and critical minerals.
Discussions are also expected to focus on strengthening regional cooperation and promoting sustainable and inclusive development across the SADC region.
On the margins of the meeting, Minister Chaponda is expected to hold bilateral engagements with his counterparts from SADC Member States and other participating countries.
The engagements will provide an opportunity to strengthen Malawi’s bilateral relations, identify new areas of cooperation, promote trade and investment opportunities, and advance development partnerships, with particular emphasis on agriculture, mining, infrastructure, tourism, and regional peace and security.
