Barely hours after announcing that Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) will hold demonstrations on November 17, 2026, it has emerged that, the Non-Governmental Organisations Regulatory Authority (NGORA) has resolved to deregister HRDC for allegedly failure to meet statutory financial reporting and governance requirements.
HRDC chairperson Micheal Kaiyatsa has confirmed the development but insisted that the planned demonstration will go on as HRDC is legally mandated to operate as a civil society even after deregistration as an NGO.
In a determination from NGORA dated 02 November 2026, addressed to HRDC chairperson the Authority said its records showed that the organisation had not submitted its 2023 financial report, despite being required to file audited financial statements and annual reports under the NGO Act.
Yesterday HRDC announced that it will hold demonstrations in Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu on November 17, 2026, demanding the resignation of the Minister of Energy over fuel shortages and prolonged electricity blackouts.
