Reports from Malawi Police Headquarters indicate that the rising crime rate is not limited to Lilongwe, as previously reported, but is affecting the entire country.
Sources within the police service attribute this development to the leadership style and conduct of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kaira.
Particular concern has been raised at Kanengo Police Station, where Superintendent Mbale allegedly a relative of DIG Kaira is accused of contributing to internal conflicts.
Officers claim that Mbale has been providing misleading information to the DIG Kaira resulting in the unfair treatment of several officers.
Some have reportedly been reassigned to general duties or transferred to other units without clear justification, a situation said to be negatively impacting police operations and national security.
An officer at Kanengo Police Station reported that DIG Kaira frequently visits the station, often relying on information from Superintendent Mbale. These visits, described as unusually frequent, have raised concerns among officers.
Tensions escalated on April 7, 2026, when DIG Kaira reportedly arrived at the station with a list of officers who were ordered to transfer within 12 hours, orders that were promptly enforced.
Cables further indicate growing dissatisfaction among officers nationwide. Many feel that their working relationship with the DIG has deteriorated significantly, leading to low morale across police formations.
There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting that some officers are considering passive resistance if no action is taken, warning that continued unrest within the police service could affect overall law enforcement effectiveness.
Additionally, a WhatsApp group allegedly titled “Anti-DIG Kaira” has reportedly been created, where officers are said to be discussing their grievances and possible responses.
The top leadership are not aware that there is a silent protest in the police service and cables have been tipped that cases of lawlessness will be on the rise , a development which will negatively affect the DPP government.
