The Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee has summoned the Blantyre Water Board’s board of directors to explain management and governance concerns at the institution, amid recent changes in its top leadership.
The committee’s vice-chairperson, Joshua Malango, says the directors are expected to appear before the committee tomorrow to clarify issues surrounding the board’s operations that have been in the public domain.
Malango says the engagement will provide an opportunity for the committee to assess how the institution is being governed, identify potential weaknesses in its management structures and establish measures needed to strengthen accountability and improve performance.
He says the inquiry remains necessary despite recent management changes, emphasising that the committee’s focus is on broader institutional governance concerns rather than individual officeholders.
The summons comes after the Blantyre Water Board dismissed its chief executive officer, Yeremiah Chihana, last week and appointed Henri Mathelo Bakuwa as his replacement.
The committee’s engagement is expected to bring further scrutiny to the water board’s governance and management arrangements, although the specific concerns to be addressed have not yet been detailed in the information provided.
The outcome of the meeting could help clarify the issues facing the institution and establish whether further action or governance reforms are necessary.
