UTM President and Former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dalitso Kabambe has called on Vice President Jane Ansah to provide clarity on President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s absence from the country and how the government is responding to Malawi’s pressing national challenges.
In a respectful open letter addressed to the Vice President, Kabambe raises questions about communication between the country’s top leadership, the President’s wellbeing and the coordination of government business during his absence.
Kabambe asks whether Ansah spoke to Mutharika before his departure, whether she has remained in contact with him since, and whether she can provide an update on his current status.
He also seeks clarification on whether the Vice President is receiving regular briefings from Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Justin Saidi regarding government operations.
The questions come amid growing public interest in the President’s extended stay in South Africa and calls for clearer communication from the authorities.
Beyond the President’s whereabouts, Kabambe has challenged the Vice President to explain how the administration is addressing the country’s wider problems.
He specifically asks whether Cabinet is meeting to deliberate on the challenges facing Malawi and develop practical solutions to ease the burden on citizens.
Malawians continue to face serious economic and public service challenges, including fuel shortages, foreign-exchange constraints and difficulties accessing essential services. These circumstances have heightened public interest in how the government is coordinating its response and ensuring continuity in national leadership.
In his letter, Kabambe stresses that a clear and timely update from the Vice President could help reassure citizens and strengthen public confidence in the country’s leadership.
He acknowledges the demands of Ansah’s office, emphasising that his questions are raised respectfully and out of concern for Malawi’s wellbeing.
The letter places the spotlight on the Vice President’s role in communicating with the public and maintaining confidence in government operations during the President’s absence.
While it does not establish that the President is unable to discharge his duties, it highlights questions about communication, Cabinet coordination and the flow of information within the executive.
