Four men have been arrested by police in Nkhata Bay District in connection with an arson incident that destroyed over 19 hectares of macadamia trees at Kawalazi Tea Estate Company’s Lichenga macadamia field.
According to Devoter Mithi, Nkhata Bay Police Public Relations Officer the incident occurred occurred on October 18, 2026 and the fire destroyed macadamia trees valued at K2,169,433,357.27.
Mithi said the company’s security officers rushed to the scene after receiving a report about the fire and failed to control it as it was uncontrollable.
She said that when the matter was reported to Nkhata Bay Police Station, Police officers went to visit the scene and confirmed the incident.
Currently the four suspects are in police custody and they will soon appear before court to answer the charges levelled against them.
