

As Malawi Cables Online reported, President Peter Mutharika has appointed Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda to represent Malawi at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
Chaponda, who is Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will attend the high-level gathering on behalf of President Mutharika.
He will be accompanied by five other Cabinet ministers as Malawi joins other countries in the annual UN meeting.
The General Assembly provides a platform for member states to discuss major global issues, including peace and security, development and international cooperation.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 8, 2026, with the assembly bringing together representatives of all 193 UN member states.
