The Malawi Government is facing legal action from 740 teachers who were promoted to Grade I in September last year after authorities allegedly failed to honour promises regarding their promotion letters and salary adjustments.
According to inside sources, the government assured the affected teachers that by the end of April this year, they would receive their official promotion letters and begin receiving salaries corresponding to their new grade.
However, the teachers claim the promises have not been fulfilled, sparking frustration and disappointment among those affected.
Speaking to Cables, several teachers expressed anger over the delay, questioning why the government has failed to implement their promotions despite recently increasing salaries for other civil servants.
“Why is the government doing this to us? Recently, we have seen the government increasing salaries for civil servants, yet it has failed to honour its promises to us teachers,” lamented one of the affected teachers.
The teachers say they have exhausted all possible channels in seeking redress and have now resolved to take the matter to court in pursuit of justice and the benefits attached to their promotions.
