United Transformation Movement (UTM) Party President Dalitso Kabambe has arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of Sunday evening’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final between Malawi’s Scorchers and Cameroon.
Kabambe arrived in Casablanca around midday on Saturday and said he had travelled to Morocco to personally support the Scorchers as they prepare to make history in their maiden WAFCON final.
“It is very important for me and all Malawians to rally behind the Scorchers as they are about to write history tomorrow as the first debutants to win this cup. This is a national cause and celebration, and that is why I made it a point to come here in person,” said Kabambe.
He also called on Malawians who have travelled to Morocco to unite and support the national team with one voice.
“Let every Malawian in the stadium be the 12th player on the pitch to give morale and energy to our girls. We are all one, and we need to have a single voice of support for the Scorchers,” he said.
Kabambe praised Malawian supporters in Morocco, particularly students, for their unwavering support throughout the tournament. He singled out Isaac “Jomo” Osman for his efforts in mobilising and encouraging supporters to continue backing the team.
“These supporters have been incredible, and kudos to Jomo Osman for relentlessly supporting and encouraging the supporters never to tire but continue supporting, even sometimes when the chips were down,” Kabambe said.
A growing number of Malawians have travelled to Morocco following the Scorchers’ historic qualification for the final on Wednesday.
National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc, the official sponsor of the Scorchers, earlier flew some of its customers and partners to Morocco for the quarter-final against Ghana and subsequently extended their stay after Malawi advanced to the final.
The Scorchers have already secured another historic achievement by qualifying for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the WAFCON semi-finals.
Malawi will face Cameroon in the WAFCON final on Sunday as the Scorchers seek to crown their remarkable debut campaign with their first continental title.
