Malawi’s President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has made notable strides in promoting women to key leadership positions since assuming office in September 2025.
During his campaign, Mutharika emphasized the importance of empowering women to take on critical roles in building the nation. This commitment is reflected not only in the appointment of a female Vice President, but also in the inclusion of women in his cabinet, particularly in strategic ministries such as health, agriculture, and energy.
In a continued push for gender equality and inclusive leadership, the President has recently appointed four women as Chief Executive Officers of major government institutions. These appointments further strengthen women’s participation in decision-making at the highest levels.
The newly appointed CEOs include Gladys Ganda, who will lead the Southern Region Water Board; Zione Themba, appointed to head Airport Development Limited; Rhoda Gadama Misomali, now leading the Youth Council; and Edna Manda, who will head Sunbird Tourism.
These appointments mark a significant milestone. Notably, all four women possess strong educational backgrounds, with Zione Themba and Edna Manda representing the youth an encouraging sign for the next generation of leaders.
Amid ongoing internal challenges within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), it is important that such progress is not overshadowed. Advancing women into leadership roles remains a vital step toward national development.
Leadership at the CEO level is not solely about technical expertise in a specific field, but about vision, governance, and the ability to guide institutions effectively.
