NRB Deploys Staff for Two Weeks Without Allowances, Food, Accommodation or Security

The National Registration Bureau (NRB) has been accused of mistreating its workers by deploying them outside their duty station for two weeks without allowances, food, accommodation, or security personnel to safeguard biometric equipment.

Cables can confidently reveal.

According to information in our possession, on 6 July 2026, NRB officials from Lilongwe were deployed to both urban and rural areas to carry out official duties until 17 July 2026, when the exercise ended.

However, throughout the entire assignment, the officers were not provided with any allowances, food, airtime, or accommodation as required.

The development forced some NRB officers to sleep in classrooms and work for days without food or allowances, a situation that adversely affected their welfare and livelihood.

As if that was not enough, the teams were deployed without security personnel to help safeguard biometric equipment and other government assets worth billions of kwacha, exposing both the officers and the equipment to unnecessary risk.

We have established that the teams successfully completed their assignment on 17 July 2026. However, to date, they have not received their payments, nor have they been given any clear official communication explaining the delay.

These patriotic citizens carried out their national duty with pride and honour. They deserve to be treated fairly and paid what they are owed, or at the very least be given a clear explanation as to why their payments have not yet been made.

When Cables made attempts to speak with officials from NRB headquarters and the Ministry of Homeland Security to understand their side of the story, we were referred from one office to another without receiving a substantive response.
