Lilongwe, Malawi — Malawi has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of five young artists in a horrific road accident that occurred as they were traveling to perform at an end-of-year concert in Lilongwe.
In a condolence message released today, former President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, together with Prof. Gertrude Mutharika, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the five members of the Hive Band who worked closely with celebrated Afro-dance artist Eli Njuchi.
“The First Lady and I are profoundly heartbroken,” the statement read, describing the victims as “remarkably talented young men” whose contributions helped shape the soul of Malawi’s music industry.
The deceased have been identified as Elivacy Matamando Muyaba, Wilfred Kupengule Jnr, Vincent Mkwinda, McFarlen Banda, and Raphael Chitsonga. According to the statement, the artists were not only musicians but instrumental figures whose passion and creativity influenced the industry for many years.
President Mutharika noted that their passing is a devastating blow not only to Eli Njuchi and the Musicians Association of Malawi, but also to the nation at large. “It is a tragedy that leaves a void in our cultural fabric,” the message stated, adding that the circumstances of their death—while traveling to bring joy to fellow Malawians—have deepened the nation’s grief.
As the country comes to terms with the loss, the President extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of the nation’s solidarity during this difficult time.
In a significant gesture of national mourning, the statement announced that the Government will cover all funeral expenses, ensuring that the late artists are laid to rest with dignity befitting “sons of Malawi.”
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief from fellow musicians, fans, and cultural leaders, many of whom have taken to social platforms to honor the lives and legacy of the fallen artists.
