Malawi’s newly sworn-in President Peter Mutharika makes his inaugural speech during his swearing-in and inauguration ceremony at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, on October 4, 2025. Malawi's new president, Peter Mutharika, took office on Saturday with a pledge to stamp out endemic corruption and revive the struggling southern African nation's battered economy. The 85-year-old, who previously served as president from 2014 to 2020, swept back to power in a decisive victory over incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, in a vote shaped by public anger over soaring living costs. Malawi’s headline inflation rate has eased to 20.8 percent in July, down from 21.1 percent in June, according to figures released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

The decline means that although the prices of goods and services continue to rise, the pace at which prices are increasing has slowed.

The latest figures mark a continued downward trend in inflation since October 2025, when the rate stood at 29.1 percent when Mutharika rose to power after ousting Malawi Congress Party .

The only notable reversal during the period came in April, when inflation increased to 24.3 percent from 23.8 percent in March, amid a rise in fuel prices.

The latest moderation in inflation is being viewed as a positive economic development under the leadership of President Arthur Peter Mutharika, as the government continues to face pressure to stabilise prices and improve economic conditions for Malawians.
