The newly appointed International Organization for Migration (IOM) ,a the United Nations agency responsible for migration Chief of Mission to Malawi, H.E. Fatma Ismail Said, met with Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito to reaffirm the organization’s commitment to supporting Malawi in migration governance and border security. The meeting was held on Tuesday morning

During the meeting, IOM pledged continued support through the expansion of the MIDAS border management system, modernization of border pass systems to facilitate safer and more efficient cross-border trade, assistance with dignified repatriation and reintegration efforts, and the promotion of safe and regular labour migration pathways within Africa.

Minister Mukhito expressed appreciation for IOM’s longstanding cooperation but raised concern over mounting migration pressures amid declining donor support. Malawi is currently hosting more than 60,000 refugees and asylum seekers, while Dzaleka Refugee Camp originally designed to accommodate 10,000 people now shelters over 62,000. The country also receives an estimated 300 to 400 new asylum seekers each month, primarily from the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa.

The Minister noted that the growing influx is placing significant strain on national systems, including correctional facilities that are increasingly accommodating migrants under challenging conditions. He called for stronger international cooperation and sustained support to help Malawi effectively manage migration while maintaining humanitarian standards and safeguarding national security.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in promoting safe, orderly, and humane migration management in Malawi.
