The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called on Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee to conduct an independent investigation into the resources used during Vice President Jane Ansah’s trip to the United Kingdom.

In a statement jointly signed by HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa and National Coordinator Kelvin Chirwa, the organization cites a lack of clarity from government officials regarding the trip, raising concerns over a possible misuse of public funds.

According to HRDC, Information Minister Shadreck Namalomba initially informed the public that the trip would cost taxpayers K168 million. However, President Peter Mutharika later stated that the Vice President was financing the trip using her personal resources, creating what HRDC describes as conflicting and confusing official statements.

The rights group is now demanding full disclosure from the government, including the total cost of the trip and clarification on whether any public funds were authorized or spent, and under what legal framework.

Vice President Ansah has been in the United Kingdom on what has been described as a private visit since December 26, 2026.
