On the sidelines of the 46th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit in Durban, South Africa, the Government of Malawi held bilateral talks with the Government of Mozambique aimed at strengthening relations and advancing areas of mutual interest between the two neighbouring countries.

The Malawian delegation was led by Second Vice President Right Honourable Enoch Kanzingeni Chihana and included the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. George Chaponda, and the Minister of Defence, Dr. Feston Kaupa.

The delegation met with President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, and members of his delegation to discuss matters of mutual interest and ways of deepening cooperation between Malawi and Mozambique.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, regional integration, economic cooperation, peace and security, trade and cross-border connectivity, as well as other areas of shared interest.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of the longstanding close ties between Malawi and Mozambique, which share a border and have extensive economic, social and cultural links. Both countries are also members of SADC, which promotes regional cooperation and integration, sustainable development, peace and security among its 16 member states.

The bilateral engagement provided an opportunity for the two governments to reaffirm their commitment to working together on issues affecting their citizens and to strengthening cooperation within the broader SADC framework.

Second Vice President Chihana has also represented Malawi in SADC-level engagements on regional peace and security, reflecting Malawi’s role in SADC’s political, defence and security architecture.
