Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, has challenged staff in the ministry to work diligently and with renewed commitment towards delivering the government’s development agenda under the leadership of President Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Mhango made the remarks during a meeting with the ministry’s management shortly after assuming office, where he urged officials to remain focused, united and results-oriented in order to transform the sector and improve service delivery.

“Let us join hands and work together to drive the government’s agenda so that we take this country out of its current situation,” said Mhango.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Transport and Public Works plays a central role in national development, noting that its mandate is a key pillar in the implementation of Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development blueprint championed by President Mutharika.

“As a ministry, we hold a critical component of government’s development agenda that is anchored in Malawi 2063. I therefore expect all of us to push in one direction as we support the President’s vision of transforming this nation,” he said.

The minister expressed confidence in the ministry’s management, commending their technical expertise and institutional experience, which he said would be vital in delivering high-impact infrastructure projects.

Mhango takes over the ministry at a time when several major infrastructure projects are either in the pipeline, under implementation, or requiring strategic re-engineering to enhance climate resilience in line with government policy.

He also highlighted the urgency of restoring roads, bridges and other public infrastructure damaged by recent heavy rains, describing the exercise as critical to boosting economic activity, improving national connectivity and strengthening public service delivery.

Mhango reaffirmed his commitment to decisive leadership and accountability, stating that under President Mutharika’s administration, the ministry must deliver tangible results that improve the lives of Malawians.
