In a swift response to mounting public criticism and in line with ongoing austerity measures, the Government of Malawi has significantly reduced the size of Vice President Jane Ansah’s delegation for her scheduled visit to the United Kingdom.

The official press release issued on December 24, 2025, by Hon. Dr. Shadric Namalomba, Government Spokesperson and Minister of Information and Communications Technology, outlines the revised arrangements for the Vice President’s trip from December 26, 2025, to January 10, 2026.

Key details from the statement:

•  Approved Delegation: The visit has been cleared for the Vice President accompanied by only five (5) accompanying officers (reduced from initial reports of up to 16 members).

•  Approved Budget: The total cost has been slashed to MK168,028,400.00, covering international air travel and allowances. This represents a substantial cut from the normal estimated cost of MK294,719,200.00.

The release emphasizes that the reduction aligns with the prevailing economic challenges and austerity measures announced by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in October 2025.

His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration remains dedicated to the principles of prudent financial management and responsible use of public resources in all official activities.”

The decision comes amid widespread public outcry over initial leaked documents suggesting a larger entourage and higher costs for what has been described as a private visit. Critics, including human rights groups, had questioned the expenditure during a time of economic hardship.

Government officials have reiterated commitment to fiscal discipline while ensuring necessary official engagements proceed responsibly.

This move is seen as a demonstration of the administration’s responsiveness to public concerns and its pledge to lead by example in resource management.
