The Malawi Government has been commended for ensuring that the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) procurement process is conducted in accordance with the law despite earlier reports alleging political interference in the awarding of contracts.
The procurement process had sparked debate after reports alleged that some politicians attempted to influence the awarding of contracts, raising concerns among governance stakeholders over possible political interference.
However, government is reported to have acted swiftly to ensure that the process remained under the responsibility of institutions mandated by law and in line with the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act.
Speaking in Machinga on Wednesday, Concerned Citizens representative Patrick Majawa described the government’s actions as a demonstration of its commitment to the rule of law, transparency and accountability.
Majawa said allowing procurement institutions to independently carry out their mandate strengthens public confidence in government and promotes good governance.
He said independent institutions play a vital role in ensuring fairness, accountability and value for money in the management of public resources.
Majawa further urged all public institutions to continue respecting procurement laws and avoid any form of political interference in procurement processes.
He said adherence to the law is key to strengthening public trust and advancing sustainable national development.
