DoDMA Warned Malawians Of Going To South Africa Now

Andy Ten July 24, 2026 (Last updated: July 24, 2026)

Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has issued a strong warning to Malawians of a risk of returning to South Africa as it is a risk at the moment.

Director of Preparedness and Response at DoDMA Charles Matabwa made the remarks in Mwanza during the distribution of transport money and other services to the returnees (people who are escaping xenophobic attacks in South Africa) by the Malawi Red Cross Society.

DoDMA is leading the process of repartriating Malawians affected by attacks on foreigners in South Africa.

General Secretary of the Malawi Red Cross Society Chifundo Kalulu said 4, 100 Malawians coming back from South Africa are going to receive transport assistance and other services from K730 million provided by International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Some of the returnees have commended government and Malawi Red Cross Society saying the assistance will help them to reach their destinations without transport challenges they could have faced.

Thousands of Malawians and other African foreigners in South Africa have been escaping from the Rainbow Nation following increase in xenophobic attacks since May.
