The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has called on the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust, an organization founded by Malawi’s First Lady, Gertrude Mutharika.
CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa said the ACB should investigate how BEAM raised MWK 17.79 billion during its launch event.
Namiwa also called on Mrs. Mutharika to publicly disclose the source of the funds used to finance BEAM’s activities.
He further urged authorities to conduct a financial investigation into BEAM covering the periods 2014 to 2020 and October 2025 to June 2026.
Among the reported contributors to BEAM were:
NBS Bank – MWK 5 billion, Zunald Moti, a South African businessman – MWK 4 billion, Wicknell Chivayo – MWK 1.7 billion, Apostle Clifford Kawinga – MWK 1 billion and Shepherd Bushiri – MWK 300 million.
However, this is doubtful that the ACB will pursue the issue as the director of ACB is implicated in a number of corruption investigations.
