President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has delegated Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata to preside over this year’s Kamuzu Day commemoration.
The development comes amid notable absences of the country’s vice presidents and leader of Malawi Congress Party from the official proceedings marking the annual event held in honour of Malawi’s founding president, Tyrant Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
Kamuzu Banda ruled Malawi for three decades under a one-party system that has remained one of the most debated periods in the country’s political history.
While some supporters credit Banda for laying the foundation for Malawi’s post-independence development and promoting discipline and national unity, critics have long condemned his administration for alleged human rights abuses, suppression of political dissent, and restrictions on press freedom.
During his rule, many Malawians reportedly fled into exile, while others faced persecution under the authoritarian system of governance that characterised the era.
Kamuzu Banda remains a significant and controversial figure in Malawi’s history, remembered both for his role in the country’s independence and for governing with a highly centralised style of leadership.
