Recently, the President found it necessary to address the nation in an interview with Brian Banda, reassuring citizens that he is alive and in good health following a week of intense speculation about his wellbeing and whereabouts.
The episode is deeply troubling. It is not only concerning that a Head of State had to publicly confirm his own existence, but also that so many people were prepared to believe and even spread unverified claims to the contrary.
That is a dangerous place for any society to find itself.
Such conduct is wrong, unacceptable, and far below the dignity that should define our nation. While criticism of the President is both legitimate and necessary in a democracy, it must be grounded in truth, facts, and responsible public debate. Spreading rumors about a leader’s illness or death or celebrating such claims is reckless, disgraceful, and harmful to national stability.
Any citizen who genuinely cares about the peace and well-being of the country should reject this behavior outright.
