President Arthur Peter Mutharika has urged the newly appointed Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Major General Blaise George Saenda, to serve the nation with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and integrity.
Speaking on Thursday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, during Saenda’s official assumption of office, Mutharika emphasized the critical role intelligence institutions play in safeguarding national interests and upholding democratic values.
The President highlighted the transformation of intelligence services over time, noting that while such institutions were historically associated with political misuse and victimisation, they have evolved into essential pillars for national security, economic protection, and stability.
“NIS carries a critical responsibility not only to ensure the safety of citizens but also to protect the country’s economy from exploitation by unscrupulous individuals masquerading as investors,” Mutharika stated.
He further underscored the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct, calling on Saenda to demonstrate loyalty, diligence, and transparency in executing his duties.
Mutharika also stressed the need for strengthened coordination between the NIS and other security and law enforcement agencies to effectively address emerging threats.
In addition, the President encouraged the new NIS leadership to embrace modern intelligence practices, including data-driven analysis and regional cooperation, to enhance the country’s ability to respond to both traditional and non-traditional security challenges.
Saenda’s appointment comes at a time when Malawi continues to prioritize institutional reforms aimed at reinforcing governance, economic resilience, and public trust in state security systems.
