
A 40 years-old woman who engage in artisanal mining in Lilongwe has died after a tunnel wall collapsed on her while searching for gold at Kang’oma in the district.
According to sub-inspector Mabvuto Phiri Kawale Police Public Relations Officer the deceased has been identified as Vetilina Chapemba who was trapped together with another person when the tunnel suddenly collapsed leaving them seriously injured.
Police detectives rushed to the scene and rescued them and took them to Kang’oma Health Centre where Chapemba was pronounced dead upon arrival and the other person was referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for further treatment.
The deceased hailed from Kadakungwa Village under Traditional Authority Madzengela in Lilongwe.
