Police in Kasungu have arrested a primary school teacher, Francis Peter Mtema for allegedly forging documents to make it appear that he had died in an attempt to have his K1.1 million outstanding loan at Select Financial Services Limited cancelled.

According Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer Miracle Hauli, Mtema allegedly submitted the fake death documents to the bank in 2023, prompting the Select Financial Services Limited to sympathise with his family and write off the loan.

The unusual case come to light years later when the teacher returns to the same institution to apply for another loan.

The institutional system flagged his application after it indicated that Mtema was already registered as deceased.

Select Financial Services Limited auditor made investigations at Kalimanyungu Primary School where they find that Mtema was still working.

Francis Mtema hails from Matchinchi in the area of Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe.
