Securities at Zomba Central Prison have intercepted 20 SIM card on 3 September 2026 concealed in boiled Irish Potatoes brought by a visitor of two inmates.
According to Zomba Central Prison authorities the contraband was packed in four bundles and hidden in food brought by Sphiwe Ngwira for inmates Yusufu Kankosya and Esau Billy.
The confiscated items were detected during routine screening using scanner installed at the Prison aiming at curbing the trafficking of contraband.
Prison officer Tamala Gondwe noticed an normally during initial scanning and ordered a second scan and subsequent manual search confirmed the presence of SIM cards.
Officer In-Charge of Zomba Central Prison, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons, Owen Mahalawipha Levi has commended the officers for their alertness.
Levi addressed other visitors and warned them against smuggling unacceptable items into the prison.
“The Scanning machine is part of our commitment to enhance security. Let this serve as warning to anyone attempting to smuggle contraband. Such acts will not be tolerated and offenders will face the law,” Levi said.
The confiscated SIM cards have been handed over to relevant authorities for further investigations
According to prison records the two inmates Yusufu Kankosya and Esau Billy are serving 24 years sentences for entering protected area with a weapons and for being found possession of endangered species.
