Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr George Chaponda has told the Parliament that about 30000 Malawians have so far been repatriated from South Africa and government seeks more support as process of repatriation continues.
Presenting a ministerial statement Chaponda said the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has been leading the repatriation exercise as waves of attacks on foreigners continue in South Africa and pleaded with Parliament to provide additional resources to complete the exercise.
He said government requires more financial and logistical support to continue repatriation exercise and ensure that all Malawians willing to be brought back home have safely returned.
Chaponda told the Parliament that current attacks on foreigners is worst outbreak of xenophobic violence South Africa has experienced in recent years.
Violence in South Africa has left thousands displaced, unemployed and helpless as they are in urgent need of assistance.
