Cables is in possession of a document addressed to President Peter Mutharika alleging that the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Brigadier General Blaise George Sayenda, was involved in acts of extortion.
According to the document, a Cabinet Minister, together with Brig. Gen. Sayenda, is accused of soliciting money from opposition figures in exchange for protection from arrest and prosecution.
The document further alleges that several weeks ago, police were preparing to arrest Hon. Simplex Chithyola, the former Minister of Finance.
After learning about the impending arrest, a senior minister reportedly met Chithyola at Bare Foot Lodge, located along the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) Campus Road in Lilongwe.
During the meeting, Chithyola was allegedly informed about the planned arrest and ways to evade the arrest .
Chithyola is reportedly linked to the alleged theft of government resources through personal bank accounts belonging to Mathias Bonongwe and accounts associated with AgriTrust, a company registered in the name of Bonongwe’s wife.
The document claims that Brig. Gen. Sayenda received substantial sums of money from Chithyola, Zamba, and their associates. It further alleges that the funds were used to purchase a personal new high-end Nissan vehicle.
Additionally, the document claims that the intelligence chief has failed to direct the Production and Analysis Division within the NIS to process and submit reports concerning alleged unethical activities of senior officials in the administration of former President Lazarus Chakwera, and Mutharika’s regime as he is allegedly to have been compromised.
