A cables publication on 20 September 2025 exposed how the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), under the leadership of George Kasakula and the Director of Administration and Human Resources at Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Justice Matonga, allegedly embarked on a hurried recruitment drive targeting suspected MCP cadres immediately after the elections to fill different posts at the state broadcaster while bypassing established hiring procedures.
Now, in a dramatic development, MBC has terminated the contracts of all district reporters and several other journalists recruited during that controversial transition period.
Sources say the Kasakula-led management handed out three-year contracts to the recruits as part of an alleged scheme to infiltrate the public broadcaster with politically connected personnel.
During the same period, some journalists who had already been serving at MBC on contractual terms were quietly offered permanent positions. Cables can confirm that many of those employees have now also been shown the exit door.
Investigations further reveal that the recruitment process was conducted in haste and allegedly ignored standard procedures, raising fresh questions about political interference, abuse of office, and the integrity of hiring practices at the state broadcaster.
